A Short History on the Margherita Pizza
Pizza is thought to have been invented in Sicily, but it is in Naples that the modern version of the pie we all enjoy comes from. The 18th century marks one of the heights of pizza where even Neopolitan royalty had pizza ovens in their villas. And in 1889, the Queen of Italy herself, Margherita of Savoy, had the city’s famous Pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito make her pizzas. He served her his pie that features a patriotic combination of red, white and green made by tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, which later became known as the “Margherita”.
